GEORGIA LAW

The following information is taken from http://georgiawildlife.dnr.state.ga.us, last updated 1/4/2002.  It is as current as possible however if in doubt check the official site or call the DNR office. This page is NOT intended to give legal advice.

"By Georgia Law, most native species of wildlife cannot be held without permits or licenses. These licenses are not issued for the purposes of holding wildlife as pets. These restrictions apply to the various species of animal, regardless of origin or morphology."

For Georgia herpers this means no cornsnakes even if it is an obvious captive bred morph (such as a snow corn, etc) or any of the other species listed below. Georgia DOES NOT in a lot of cases break species down into subspecies (for instance they list Ribbon Snakes, with no exception for Western Ribbons which are not a Georgia native). Our advice is if in doubt check with the DNR before you purchase or pick a species that is without a doubt NOT LISTED.

"Georgia Law allows the taking of certain native species; namely rats, mice, armadillos, coyotes, groundhogs, beaver, freshwater turtles, poisonous snakes, frogs, spring lizards, fiddler crabs, freshwater crayfish, freshwater mussels, and nutria;  because of their status as a nuisance or other reason. State regulations prohibit the holding of live armadillos, coyotes, groundhogs, and beaver without the proper permits or licenses. Certain freshwater turtles, mussels, and other species on Georgia's Protected Wildlife List cannot be posseessed or collected without proper licenses."
